戦争 (Sensou) (War)

I had the pleasure of translating for Soke for about 20 minutes after Sundays class. Soke spoke to us alot about war, and warfare. He told us to be especially careful in the world because of all the terrorism going on. He mentioned that it is very difficult to fight terrorism, because it is such a small thing.

Soke said that we do not fear things that are big, or which we can see. For example, if there was a missile being shot in our direction, we would have time to move or reposition ourselves or our troops. However, terrorism is very small, and can not be easily detected.

Soke mentioned that terrorists will stop at no means to get the job done. They will use women, and even children to carry out their deeds. He told us that we must be careful of these things, and must develop the ability to avoid such things.

Every since last year, Soke seems to be inflicting more pain in his uke’s than I have ever seen before. Maybe I say this, because I have been on his recieving end every class I attended since last year. Everyone looks at Soke’s movements as being gentle, however, there is a lot of pain and destruction on the end of his finger tips. This is very similiar to terrorism. We have to be careful who we trust. We also have to have the eyes to see who people really are. For example, watching Soke in the dojo, he looks like he is doing nothing to his uke. This can be related to looking at an old women crossing the street. The women may look innocent, only to find out that she just commited a crime. This is the same with Soke’s movement. Many people may be fooled thinking Soke is just a kind old man. Although kind, Soke’s energy and power is stronger than most of us combined. This is something that draws me to this art. I like to see how Soke and the four Shihan have the ability to move so freely at an older age. I am only 28, but I hope to be able to move so freely when I am at their age.

Being a former U.S. Air Force Security Forces Member, I understand what Soke was talking about. When I lived in England, 9/11 had just hit. We had to work 16 hours a day, and we were armed with all types of weapons. Our base was probed quite a bit, and Surface to Air missile cartriges were found around the base. We must prepare ourself for whatever type of warfare we might be faced with. I believe that Soke is giving us the tools to deal with such a situation.

Sincerely,

Chris Carbonaro
