痛くしないとだめ (It should be done in a painful manner)

Kamioka-san 2008

We had a very interesting conversation in Japan with Nagato Sensei and Kamioka-san. Nagato Sensei was talking about how now a days, many people do not understand pain anymore. When Nagato Sensei was a kid, he told us that many people used to fight when growing up. This was very much the same for many of us as well. After two individuals finished fighting, they would get up, shake hands, and become friends. However, now a days, more and more laws are preventing what may be necessary violence. Nagato Sensei said that both war and peace are connected. If we only had peace, we would just continue to grow until we consumed all the resources on earth. Nagato Sensei explained that war is a type of Natural Selection. With this being said, many people are too soft. We have become a scociety that can not handle any type of pain. This can be said the same for our taijutsu.

Kamioka-san explained to me that many people have forgotten the pain that is associated with our art. He said that when he first started training 29 years ago, they did not have any safe weapons. They used hard wood weapons, which causes pain instantaneously to the body. Now, because we use soft weapons, many people continue to try and fight their way through the technique. However, you will often see Soke using real weapons when showing a technique, especially with Yabunaka-san. You can often see the fear that Yabunaka has when punching at sensei. The reason for this, is because he understands the truth behind our techniques. This is the same for our taijutsu. Often times we do not apply enough pain to make the technique work. I noticed in Japan that many of the techniques I was trying to do did not work. I then got upset with myself and wondered why. I then realized that it was because I was not really trying to do the technique. I was just trying to study the angles and lines of what was being shown. However, you can never reproduce what was shown, unless you do exactly what it was that was being shown. If Nagato sensei shuto’d someone in the face, you will have to do the same to your opponent while you are training. If you do not, then you can not reproduce the technique, because that one piece is missing. I am not saying that everyone should try to kill each other. All you need to do is train with control.
